The 6 adhkar to say, in the book’s order
Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘alallah
In the name of Allah. I put my trust in Allah, and there is no power and no strength except through Allah.
Said on leaving home. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says it is told: you are guided, you are looked after and you are protected; and the devil turns away from him.
Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika an adilla
Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika an adilla aw udall, aw azilla aw uzall, aw azlima aw uzlam, aw ajhala aw yujhala ‘alayy.
O Allah, I seek refuge with You from going astray or being led astray, from slipping or being made to slip, from wronging others or being wronged, and from acting foolishly or being treated foolishly.
Said on leaving home.
Bismillahi walajna
Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa ‘alallahi rabbina tawakkalna.
In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and in Allah, our Lord, we put our trust.
Said on coming home. Then greet your family with salam.
Bismillah, wal-hamdu lillah, subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha
Bismillah, wal-hamdu lillah. Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun. Alhamdu lillah, alhamdu lillah, alhamdu lillah, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Subhanakallahumma inni zalamtu nafsi faghfir li, fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant.
In the name of Allah, and praise be to Allah. Glory be to the One who has made this serve us, for we could never have managed it ourselves, and it is to our Lord that we are returning. Praise be to Allah (three times). Allah is the Greatest (three times). Glory be to You, O Allah; I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.
Said when you get on a vehicle or an animal. The words in the middle are from the Quran (43:13–14).
The dua for travelling
Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila rabbina lamunqalibun. Allahumma inna nas’aluka fi safarina hadhal-birra wat-taqwa, wa minal-‘amali ma tarda. Allahumma hawwin ‘alayna safarana hadha watwi ‘anna bu‘dah. Allahumma antas-sahibu fis-safar, wal-khalifatu fil-ahl. Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika min wa‘tha’is-safar, wa ka’abatil-manzar, wa su’il-munqalabi fil-mali wal-ahl. Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna, lirabbina hamidun.
Allah is the Greatest (three times). Glory be to the One who has made this serve us, for we could never have managed it ourselves, and it is to our Lord that we are returning. O Allah, on this journey we ask You for goodness and for awareness of You, and for deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance for us. O Allah, You are our Companion on the road and the One who stays with the family we leave. O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the strain of travelling, from upsetting sights, and from coming home to find harm in my wealth or my family. On the way back, say it again and add: Home we come, repenting, worshipping, praising our Lord.
The words after the takbir are from the Quran (43:13–14).
Ayibuna, ta’ibuna, ‘abiduna
There is no god but Allah, alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. We are returning, repenting, worshipping and praising our Lord. Allah has kept His promise, helped His servant and defeated the allied forces alone.
On the way home, say “Allahu akbar” three times at every high point, then this.
