In bed, before you sleep

Adhkar before sleep: every dhikr, with a counter

The words for lying down to sleep: the three Quls, Ayat al-Kursi, the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah and the short duas for the night, each with its reference.

Tap the number under each dhikr every time you say it. It turns to “Done” at the count the book gives. 0 of 13 done today.

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Ever-Merciful. Say: He is Allah, One. Allah, to whom everyone turns in need. He has no child, nor was He born of anyone. And there is no one like Him. In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Ever-Merciful. Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak, from the harm of whatever He has created, from the harm of night when its darkness falls, from the harm of those who blow on knots, and from the harm of someone envious when he envies. In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Ever-Merciful. Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the harm of the sneaking whisperer, who whispers into the hearts of mankind, whether jinn or human.

Put your palms together, blow lightly into them and recite the three surahs, then wipe your hands over as much of your body as you can, starting with your head, your face and the front of your body. Do this three times.

Ayat al-Kursi before sleeping

Allah: there is no god but Him, the Living, the One who sustains all. He is never overcome by drowsiness or sleep. Everything in the heavens and everything on earth is His. Who can intercede with Him except with His leave? He knows what lies before people and what lies behind them, and they cannot take in any of His knowledge except what He wills. His Seat (Kursi) spans the heavens and the earth, and looking after them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Supreme.

The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that whoever recites it on going to bed has a guardian from Allah all night, and no devil comes near him until morning.

The last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah

The Messenger believes in what his Lord has sent down to him, and so do the believers. They all believe in Allah, His angels, His scriptures and His messengers: “We do not separate one of His messengers from another.” And they say: “We have heard, and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord! To You we all return.” Allah does not ask of any soul more than it can do. Each will have the good it has earned, and bear the bad it has done. “Our Lord, do not punish us if we forget or slip up. Our Lord, do not put on us a heavy load like the one You put on those before us. Our Lord, do not load us with more than we can carry. Pardon us, forgive us and have mercy on us. You are our Master; help us, then, against the people who disbelieve.”

Quran 2:285–286. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites these two verses at night, they will be enough for him.

In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it up. If You take my soul, have mercy on it; and if You send it back, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.

The Prophet ﷺ said to dust off your bed with the edge of your garment before lying down, then say this.

Allahumma innaka khalaqta nafsi wa anta tawaffaha, laka mamatuha wa mahyaha, in ahyaytaha fahfazha, wa in amattaha faghfir laha. Allahumma inni as’alukal-‘afiyah.

O Allah, You created my soul and You take it in death. Its death and its life are Yours. If You keep it alive, protect it; and if You cause it to die, forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for well-being.

O Allah, keep me safe from Your punishment on the day You bring Your servants back to life.

The Prophet ﷺ would put his right hand under his cheek and say this three times.

O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, who splits the seed and the date stone, who sent down the Torah, the Gospel and the Criterion: I seek refuge with You from the evil of everything whose forelock You hold. O Allah, You are the First, and there is nothing before You; You are the Last, and there is nothing after You; You are the Manifest, and there is nothing above You; You are the Hidden, and there is nothing beyond You.
