Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.

Said after wudu. The Prophet ﷺ said that the eight gates of Paradise are opened for whoever makes wudu well and then says this, to enter by whichever he wishes.

O Allah, place light in my heart, light on my tongue, light in my hearing and light in my sight; light above me and light below me, light on my right and light on my left, light in front of me and light behind me. Place light in my soul, make light great for me, make it greater for me, give me light and make me light. O Allah, give me light, and place light in my sinews, in my flesh, in my blood, in my hair and in my skin. [O Allah, give me light in my grave… and light in my bones.] [Increase me in light, increase me in light, increase me in light.] [And give me light upon light.]

A‘udhu billahil-‘azim… Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatik

A‘udhu billahil-‘azim, wa biwajhihil-karim, wa sultanihil-qadim, minash-shaytanir-rajim. [Bismillah, was-salatu] [was-salamu ‘ala rasulillah.] Allahummaftah li abwaba rahmatik.

I seek protection with Allah, the Almighty, with His generous Face and His everlasting power, from the outcast devil. [In Allah’s name, and blessings] [and peace on Allah’s Messenger.] O Allah, open the doors of Your mercy to me.

Go in with your right foot first, then say it.

Repeat the adhan after the muezzin

La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

Repeat what the muezzin says, except for “Hayya ‘alas-salah” and “Hayya ‘alal-falah” (come to the prayer, come to success), where you say: There is no power and no strength except through Allah.

Hisn al-Muslim 22 · Sahih al-Bukhari 611 · Sahih Muslim 385

Wa ana ashhadu… raditu billahi rabba

And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Muhammad as Messenger and with Islam as my religion.

Said after the muezzin’s testimony of faith. The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says it is forgiven his sins.

Hisn al-Muslim 23 · Sahih Muslim 386

Send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ

When you have finished answering the muezzin, send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ.

The Prophet ﷺ said: whoever sends one blessing on me, Allah sends ten on him; then ask Allah to give me al-wasilah.

Hisn al-Muslim 24 · Sahih Muslim 384

Allahumma rabba hadhihid-da‘watit-tammah

Allahumma rabba hadhihid-da‘watit-tammah, was-salatil-qa’imah, ati Muhammadanil-wasilata wal-fadilah, wab‘athhu maqaman mahmudanil-ladhi wa‘adtah, [innaka la tukhliful-mi‘ad].

O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer about to begin, give Muhammad the place of nearness (al-wasilah) and the highest honour, and raise him to the praised station that You promised him. [You never break Your promise.]

The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says this after hearing the call to prayer will have his intercession on the Day of Resurrection.

Make dua between the adhan and the iqamah

Make dua for yourself between the adhan and the iqamah, for a dua made then is not turned away.
